Athletics

Athletics is an integral part of St. Patrick’s effort to nurture the mind, body, and spirit. Competitive interscholastic sports enable boys and girls to understand and practice the values of teamwork, commitment, and sportsmanship and to develop a positive work ethic. Sports provide an opportunity for students to learn how to work with others toward a common goal, to discipline themselves mentally and physically, and to gain confidence in their abilities.

St. Patrick’s is a member of the Capital Athletic Conference, a group of like-configured independent schools in Maryland, Virginia, and the District that provides a safe and compatible level of competition among its members. The CAC awards league banners for top finishers in regular-season and tournament play and for outstanding sportsmanship as a school. (St. Patrick’s has been a frequent recipient of the CAC Sportsmanship Award, voted by league athletic directors.) St. Patrick’s also plays other schools that are not in the CAC. To date, we have played every major school in the area that sponsors competition for our grade levels. St. Patrick’s fields interscholastic teams on the varsity and junior varsity levels.

The varsity teams comprise students in Grades 7 and 8, for whom athletics is a required component of the school day. Grade 6 students play on junior varsity teams. More information is contained in the Sports Handbook, which is available to all families on the St. Patrick’s website. All participants in athletics must read the handbook before they may play a sport.
