Young Mathematicians in Action: Launching Our Lower School Junior Math Team

Grade 5 Teacher Betsy Kelly and Jen Congdon are excited to start the St. Patrick’s Junior Math Team.

This new initiative complements our adoption of the Illustrative Math Curriculum last school year following a months-long review of the top programs used by independent schools in our region and nationally. A fundamental principle outlined by Illustrative Math is the focus on the three aspects of rigor—conceptual understanding, procedural fluency, and application—ensuring students develop a deep, well-rounded mastery of mathematical concepts. Grades 4 and 5 students eager for challenges beyond the traditional math classroom have been enthusiastically participating in this exciting new initiative. Led by Betsy and Jen, a large group of students passionate about numbers or curious to explore the joy of problem-solving has been gathering together on Friday mornings every two weeks before school.

The Junior Math Team emphasizes the pleasure of thinking deeply about intriguing mathematical problems and celebrates the joy of intellectual discovery. Research shows that giving students the time and space to grapple with problems helps develop critical thinking skills, resilience, and a growth mindset—key attributes for success in mathematics and beyond. Participants tackle fascinating problems that stimulate creative thinking and advanced problem-solving skills throughout the years. Working together, students explore solutions, share ideas, and support one another in a fun and engaging setting.

This experience also provides an excellent opportunity for students to explore what it will be like to be part of the Middle School Math Team while building foundational skills for continued mathematical excellence. Our Middle School Math Team participated in a highly competitive meet this week, going up against teams from 13 other schools at St. Albans. A special shoutout to Graham W. '25 who led the team in answering every question correctly!

The year-long journey for our Junior Math Team will culminate in an exciting competition where students can showcase their growth and advanced problem-solving skills in a friendly and encouraging environment.

I am grateful for our administrators’ and teachers’ commitment to fostering a love of learning, creating opportunities for students to challenge themselves, and supporting their growth in and beyond the classroom
