On Thursday, January 26, over 40 members of the community gathered on Zoom to “grow their toolbox” for conversations with young people about race and difference. We began the evening with a review of norms and terminology and then discussed some current topics in the news. After describing a strategy for deep listening, we practiced in breakout rooms, using some real-life scenarios that schools have shared over time. A few big takeaways were “comfort comes from practice,” “use any opportunities to educate your child to be an advocate,” and “progress over perfection.”
Attached is a workbook that reviews the materials covered.
