Thinking Big: Upper Elementary Math Team Begins a New Year

Last Friday, interested students in Grades 4 and 5 began their day in the Design Lab becoming members of this year’s Upper Elementary Math Team. Led by Grade 5 teacher Betsy Kelly and Assistant Head of School for Academics and Head of Upper Elementary Jenifer Congdon, the Math Team provides students with a challenge above and beyond the math classroom. It highlights the pleasure of thinking hard about interesting mathematical problems and the joy of intellectual pursuit. The air on Friday morning in the Design Lab was abuzz as students attempted to solve challenging problems and share their solutions and strategies with each other.

Over the course of the year, students will participate in math challenges, explore their mathematical problem solving in a collaborative, fun environment, and get a taste for what is ahead when they have the option to join the Middle School Math Team in Grade 6. In the spring, the Upper Elementary Math Team will have the chance to compete in a math meet with one or two upper elementary math teams from other schools.
