Unveiling Our New Lower School Science Labs!

Have you heard? We have new science labs in the Lower School! These purpose-built spaces, designed with input from the Lower School science teachers, were open for use by students on the first day of school. Some additional finishing touches will be added to the labs throughout the fall.  Features of the new spaces include child-height sinks, built-in grow walls for seedlings, flexible seating arrangements, and ample space for hands-on exploration and experimentation, perfect for our curricular emphasis on life science, earth science, and physical science.

The St. Patrick’s Garden & Outdoor Learning Space remains open, and a central part of our hands-on science curriculum in the Lower School, and students are loving being in the K-2 and 3-5 labs now for science class. When asked about the new science spaces, Grade 5 student Bekalu responded, “It’s amazing! I love it. They’re bigger than I thought they would be!” Elizabeth (Grade 3) added, “They’re really cool, and I can’t wait until they’re finished. These labs are really nice, and there’s a lot of space in them.”

Our Lower School science program seeks to deepen students’ enthusiasm and wonder while guiding them through activities designed to help them become more disciplined young scientists. These new labs facilitate increased practice for observing, describing, predicting, testing, and recording ideas.
