The Social Institute Offers Families More Resources For Helping Students Manage Technology and Social Media

In mid-December, The Social Institute offered a nationwide webinar featuring three high school students from independent schools sharing reflections about how they interact with social media.

Although much of the webinar addressed how schools and educators could support students, The Social Institute welcomed families as well, and significant portions of the conversation were relevant in both home and school contexts. Importantly for St. Patrick’s families, the student panelists mentioned that they had started using social media in middle school. (St. Patrick’s implements The Social Institute’s #WinAtSocial Program with all of our Grades 5 to 8 students.)

In the first 25 minutes of the webinar, which was recorded, student panelists started by sharing ways in which social media has improved their lives. They also reflected on social media’s pressure to “be perfect” and discussed ways to address this pressure.

Minutes 26 through 42 of the webinar mainly addressed school policies and provided tips for how educators could support students, but minutes 42 through 49 of the webinar addressed procrastination, to-do list apps, and issues related to focusing and relaxing—all of which may be relevant at home.

The webinar wrapped up the 2022 calendar year and may serve as a useful follow-up to the October 25 Writing & Learning Center presentation the Social Institute delivered specifically for St. Patrick’s families. Both presentations were recorded. Please click here for the October 25 presentation, and please click here for the December 14 presentation.
