Sustainability Team Updates from Grades 4 & 5

The Grade 4 Sustainability Team started the year brainstorming ways to help the St. Patrick’s Whitehaven Campus become more sustainable! They have spent the last few months planning an invasive species removal. On February 24, they headed into the outdoor classroom behind the Gymnasium & Performance Center to remove leatherleaf mahonia, a pesky invasive species that has been taking over our woods. The group used saws, shovels, and other garden tools to cut out as many as possible. The day was a big success, and the group is planning another outing for later in March!

The Grade 5 Sustainability Team had a fantastic day at the Palisades Farmers Market on March 5, selling baked goods to help endangered sloths! They planned and designed every element of their day and spent weeks researching how they could best help sloths. The group ended up raising over $500.00 for The Sloth Conservation Foundation. Our Wolfhounds were excited to explain to market-goers how their money would help rebuild sloth habitats, give sloths safe ways to move about the rainforest, and support one of the planet’s slowest mammals.
