St. Patrick’s Middle Schoolers Shine at DC Scrabble Tournament

On Saturday, January 31, six St. Patrick’s Middle School students (Anders B. ’28, Curtis B. ’28, Colton D. ’28, Hugh S. ’28, Samuel S. ’27, and Bekalu W. ’27), along with St. Patrick’s alum Will G. ’27, joined 55 other middle schoolers from across Washington, DC, for an all-day Scrabble tournament hosted by Alice Deal Middle School.

Bekalu and Samuel placed second in their division and were recognized at the awards ceremony for their impressive bingo word (using all seven tiles in a single play), lexicon. Curtis and Hugh were also honored for their bingo play with the word jeweled. Throughout the day, St. Patrick’s students demonstrated outstanding sportsmanship, enthusiastically cheering one another on—even when facing each other across the board.

The Scrabble Club’s next competition will be a two-day national tournament at Planet Word on March 14 and 15.

The St. Patrick’s Middle School Scrabble Club meets on Fridays from 3:15 to 4:30 pm on campus. Students who are curious are encouraged to stop by a meeting to play a few games, enjoy some treats, and see what the club is all about. New members are always welcome!
