Sip & Shine: Supporting Grade 8 on Their Secondary School Placement Journey

This year, as our Grade 8 class begins its final year at St. Patrick’s, each student is being invited to have a brief, personal conversation with a trusted adult at St. Patrick’s. Sip & Shine, as we have dubbed it, is a time for our Grade 8 students to enjoy a favorite drink while reflecting on the year ahead. A wonderful part of the experience is that students were asked for their favorite beverage without knowing why; then, they were surprised when a trusted adult showed up with that drink in hand to start the conversation. Their selections ranged from coffee and tea to smoothies and juices, making the experience feel both personal and special.

In an informal meeting with an administrator, students are asked guiding questions: “What matters most to you as you step into your Grade 8 year?” and “This is your year to shine—how can we help you get there?

By bringing together comfort, choice, and support, we hope to remind the students of all they are capable of and of the adults who stand ready to support them along the way. The outcome is that students enter their final year with purpose, encouragement, and a clear path forward.
