Students in Kindergarten, Grade 1, and Grade 2 took their second field trip of the year when they traveled to the Kennedy Center the week after Thanksgiving break to see a performance of The Day You Begin. This world-premiere commissioned musical is based on one of the Kennedy Center Artist-in-Residence Jacqueline Woodson’s most popular picture books for children. Jacqueline Woodson is the recipient of a 2020 MacArthur Fellowship, the 2020 Hans Christian Andersen Award, the 2018 Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award, and the 2018 Children’s Literature Legacy Award. The Day You Begin, a former St. Patrick’s Book-of-the-Month, follows children who take their first steps into a place where nobody knows them yet, and that new space opens itself up to make a place for its newcomers. This poignant and heartening performance encourages us to find the courage to make new friends, hear new stories, and see our own magic in the world.
