Inspiring Voices: Inside the Grade 7 Coffee House

Grade 7 families loved ending last week gathered in the warm, inviting Great Hall, nestled around the crackling fireplace, and being entertained by Grade 7 students. The afternoon was filled with beautiful music, original poetry written and shared by students that captured the depth of their creativity. On January 23, the Grade 7 Coffee House brought this space to life, marking a signature moment in the Middle School experience. Through performances that included well-known songs newly arranged, students showcased their talents, passions, and growing confidence as performers.

In the weeks leading up to the Coffee House, Grade 7 students worked with focus and care to prepare for this special event. Under the guidance of music teacher Alicia Knox, students selected pieces, arranged their music, and practiced to perform for a live audience. At the same time, they completed a poetry unit that invited them to explore a wide range of poetic forms and voices, drawing inspiration from both classic and contemporary poets. Students experimented with theme, voice, and technique, ultimately crafting original works that reflected their thinking and emotions with honesty and courage. The growth they demonstrated as musicians, writers, and performers was both evident and deeply moving.

We are immensely proud of the Grade 7 students for their dedication, creativity, and bravery in sharing their work. The Coffee House reflects the school’s commitment to providing meaningful opportunities for students to refine their skills, take pride in their accomplishments, and invite families into the rich synergy between teaching and learning that defines the Day School. Heartfelt thanks go to the Middle School faculty for their thoughtful guidance and to the families whose encouragement made the afternoon possible. The community looks forward to continuing to celebrate the creativity and voices of its students in the months ahead.

A special thanks to Dave Taylor (Grandfather of Chip T. ‘27) for the wonderful photos that accompany this article. We appreciate you, Dave!
