Grade 7 Science Project Builds Understanding of Electricity

Grade 7 students completed a study of electricity in science this fall. To assess their progress, all students completed a project, designing and building a spin art machine. Each student received a variety of materials, including a Houndpack box, wires, a motor, battery holder, batteries, switches, a small plastic gear or wheel, paint, and cardstock. Without direct instruction, but rather with a goal assigned by the teacher, students then drew circuit diagrams of their machines.

They needed to rely on their lab experiences and understanding of circuits to plan and construct their project circuits. In this project, students had the opportunity to construct machines that can be turned on and off with a switch and were challenged to design them so that materials did not get messy. The outcome was a fantastic set of devices that accomplished their goal and demonstrated strong student understanding.
