Grade 6 students Impress at Ancient Greek Mythology Performances

Grade 6 students recently prepared performances inspired by their fall Ancient Greece and Greek mythology unit! Each class worked with Middle School Music Teacher Ms. Knox in their music classes to put together a famous Greek myth that included acting, music, and dance. Their hard work was evident as each class confidently performed and showed their incredible musical abilities!

6Y took the stage on Thursday, February 29, and performed the story of Demeter and Persephone, a myth about our seasons. Persephone is captured by Hades and taken to the Underworld. Demeter, her adoring mother, is angry and, as the goddess of the harvest, declares nothing shall grow on Earth. Zeus compromises with Hades, allowing Persephone to rejoin Demeter on Earth for six months of the year. According to the myth, this is why crops only grow for part of the year.

6X performed on Monday, March 4, and presented the story of Orpheus and Eurydice. This is another unfortunate tale of someone being separated from their loved ones in the Underworld. Hades makes a deal with Orpheus that if he doesn’t look back at her, he can lead Eurydice back to the mortal world. Unfortunately, Orpheus doesn’t trust Hades at his word and looks back before they reach Earth. Eurydice is banished to the Underworld forever.

6Z rounded out the series of shows on Tuesday, March 5, with the story of Pandora’s Box. Zeus is angry with the mortals and wants to punish them. He does so by setting a plan in motion to release all sorts of terrible miseries upon them. He gives a gift to Pandora - a box filled with these miseries and tells her never to open the box. Pandora is curious and opens the box. Everything from disease to death is unleashed on the mortals. Only hope stays in the box to comfort the mortals despite all the evils.

Congratulations to all three classes on their amazing performances!! And a big thank you to Grade 7 Humanities Teacher, Mr. Neilan, for playing guitar for 6X and Orpheus’ lyre music, as well as the rest of the Grade 6 team for all of their support and flexibility: Dr. Cole, Ms. Corradi, Mr. Jones, Ms. Smith, and Ms. Yount.
