Grade 5 students are writing and illustrating suspense stories during Writers Workshop and Art. Inspired by opening scenes from Hamlet and Macbeth, and mentor texts written by Joan Aiken, Charles Boardman Hayes, and others, students discovered how the use of setting, strong verbs, and internal dialogue contribute to the craft of writing suspense.
Students tapped into real fears as springboards for their stories: being home alone, having a tooth pulled, a class overnight trip, and then let their imaginations take over! This past week, students began painting those settings in their art classes. The paintings will be focusing on expressing the emotions found in their narratives through color, composition, and brushstrokes.
