Extra, Extra, Read All About It: Middle School Shines With Amazing Artwork & Performance of Newsies Jr.!

As happens on a Friday evening in the middle of May, the Gymnasium and Performing Arts Center at St. Patrick’s came to life at the always extraordinary Middle School Performing and Studio Arts Night. From the visual arts presentation HisStory, HerStory, OurStory, to the musical rendition of "Newsies Jr.," the students shone with their outstanding artwork and enthusiastic performance. Parents, teachers, alumni, and friends filled the space and took in the vibrant set, colorful costumes, and extraordinary artistic displays.

Our artists’ work left the attendees inspired as they appreciated paintings, drawings, photographs, and digital creations. When the event opened, each artist took time to share the vision they had for their work, standing by their collections and welcoming visitors for conversation and explanation. On the stage, our performers took the audience back to 1899 and the newsboy strike of New York City. The musical progresses with the charismatic Jack Kelly, a leader among the newsboys, rallying his fellow newsies to strike against unfair newspaper publishers who have raised their prices. Through the strike, the newsies learn the power of unity and fight for better working conditions.

Guided by Art teacher Kyujin Lee and Music teacher Alicia Knox, the night was a testament to the value of hard work and the depth of creativity nurtured here. As the evening came to a close, the spirit of the assembled group and the effort of the students took over as our performers took advantage of their curtain call to toss their hats into the crowd.
