Kindergarten Field Trip to Discovery Theatre!

Before Winter Break, Kindergarten students enjoyed their second field trip of the school year. They traveled to see a “Seasons of Light” performance at the Smithsonian’s Discovery Theater. This show encapsulates the joy, warmth, and community spirit that illuminate holiday festivals all over the world. This signature Discovery Theater show celebrates the history and customs of Diwali, Hanukkah, Las Posadas, Ramadan, Sankta Lucia Day, Kwanzaa, Christmas, and the First Nations’ tradition of the Winter Solstice in an interactive extravaganza bridging communities and cultures.

This show dovetails perfectly with the Kindergarten thematic social studies unit on Holidays of Light, where students participate during this time of year. Equipped with background knowledge, students had various observations about the show, including “I noticed the performers wore different clothes for each holiday.” (Lynda M.) “I knew that Christmas was real.” (Fitz B.) “I saw a white tree with decorations. There were songs. It was a good show.” (Owen O.) Sounds like a smashing success!
