PLANTER NEAR CHURCH COURTYARD MOVING TOWARD COMPLETION
No, it's not a fountain . . . with or without a statue of the Head of School at its center. No, it's not a missile launch facility, protecting the Potomac River approach to the Nation's Capital. Instead, it's a circular planter, which will grace the steps to the Church Courtyard entrance. There will also be a "floating bench" that encircles the planter, where Nursery School students can sit at arrival and departure times. Plans call for the concrete for the planter to be poured today and for the surrounding sidewalk to be poured early next week, weather permitting. Wondering what the planter and floating bench will look like when work is complete? Have a look at a similar one at the corner of Idaho Avenue and Wisconsin Avenue, NW, which was the inspiration for the St. Patrick's structure.

BACK-TO-SCHOOL PRESENTATIONS BEGIN TONIGHT
Families with students in Grades 6 to 8 come to the MacArthur Campus tonight to hear about the academic and other programs that will engage their children this year at the first of our three Back-to-School Night presentations. For parents attending tonight, parking is on the Whitehaven Campus. We will run a series of shuttle buses every five minutes beginning at 5:30 pm. Return shuttles will leave at similar intervals. Please feel free also to walk, take public transportation, or taxi or Uber to the MacArthur Campus.

THIS WEEK IN THE LIBRARY: Rosh Hashanah, September 9-11, and Yom Kippur, September 18-19

SESSION I AFTER-SCHOOL CLUBS STILL HAVE A FEW OPENINGS
After-School Clubs are off to a great start. Kindly note that online registration will close Monday, September 24. We have limited space available in the following clubs.

OUTSIDE TEAMS, ORGANIZATIONS, AND CLASSES
Often parents organize teams and groups to participate in local youth sports leagues, such as Stoddert Soccer. We ask that, when organizing these teams, parents follow the spirit of inclusion as outlined in our birthday party policy. Please extend an invitation to participate to all students in a grade or all students of one gender in a grade. If you are uncertain about how to compose a team in a manner consistent with this policy, please contact the appropriate Division Head. We highly discourage participation in outside activities that adopt exclusive, rather than inclusive, policies. Thank you for your support of this policy!

OUR HOMEWORK PHILOSOPHY
At St. Patrick's, we believe homework is an essential part of the learning process and, therefore, assign homework on a regular basis. Homework serves a variety of purposes, including reinforcing skills and concepts learned during the school day, preparing for upcoming lessons and activities, stretching and extending thinking about topics learned in class, and helping students understand the connection between regular, engaging work outside of the classroom and academic success.

KINDERGARTEN BOOKS, BEARS, AND BLANKETS

SECONDARY SCHOOL MEETING WITH GRADE 8 PARENTS SCHEDULED FOR TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 25
One of the gifts of transitioning from St. Patrick's to high school is the extensive support St. Patrick's provides its Grade 8 families in the placement process. In addition to a spring Parent Coffee that introduces parents of our then-Grade 7 students to what lies ahead, we meet individually with each family over the summer to discuss the array of schools in the area and draw up a list of schools for families to visit. Once the school year has started, we host a coffee for Grade 8 to help guide parents through the early steps of the high school search and application process.

WOLFHOUNDS SOCCER SEASON OPENS STRONG

COMMON SENSE MEDIA TIPS

SEPTEMBER TIPS FROM COMMON SENSE MEDIA
For years, when St. Patrick's teachers, parents, and students have discussed how to help one another enact the Creed in our online lives, we have drawn from Common Sense Media's resources. Common Sense Media's curriculum for students, online platform for finding app and movie reviews, and suggestions for facilitating schoolwide discussions have helped us find ways to use technology that are kind, responsible, honest, and respectful. As a Common Sense Media Supporter School, St. Patrick's receives Common Sense tips that we look forward to sharing monthly. Below, please find September's tips.
