WRITING & LEARNING CENTER COFFEE: STARTING SCHOOL RIGHT Last year, we began one of the most exciting and successful parent education undertakings at St. Patrick's: The Writing & Learning Center Coffee Series. Overseen by the Writing & Learning Center on the MacArthur Campus, the goal of the coffee series is to provide parents with essential information on raising healthy, resilient, successful young adolescents. OCTOBER 9 PROFESSIONAL DAY FEATURES ACCREDITATION FOCUS Shared professional time is not always easy to come by in a busy school day or week. On Tuesday, October 9, faculty will spend a Professional Day working in advance of students' return from the Fall Break Weekend on Wednesday. KINDERGARTEN TO GRADE 5 BACK-TO-SCHOOL NIGHT TONIGHT Last week, we began a three-week stretch of Back-to-School Night presentations with the Grades 6 to 8 program on the MacArthur Campus. Tonight we continue with these important evenings by hosting parents of students of Kindergarten to Grade 5 parents on the Whitehaven Campus. These events are intended to share with parents important information about our academic and co-curricular programs. STUDENTS, FACULTY, AND STAFF PREPARE FOR OCTOBER HAITI TRIP Life-changing. The three students from the MacArthur Campus who traveled to Haiti last winter each repeated this phrase in their remarks at a chapel after they returned. Inspired by this profound effect and the growing energy from this trip and the one before, the first in 15 years to include students, St. Patrick's will send seven students from the MacArthur Campus to Haiti next Thursday for a five-day trip. Their leadership, combined with that of the earlier student travelers, will fuel our partnership with Haiti throughout the year. ST. FRANCIS DAY CHAPEL AND THE BLESSING OF THE WOLFHOUNDS ON THURSDAY, OCTOBER 4 On Thursday, October 4, at 8:30 am, students in Kindergarten to Grade 4 will gather to celebrate St. Francis and welcome Millie and Rhiannon, two beautiful Irish wolfhounds who have joined us in recent years. During chapel, Ms. Gamber will be blessing the wolfhounds. After chapel concludes, and before Millie and Rhiannon visit PK and Nursery students, children will have the opportunity to greet the wolfhounds. If your child has a pet allergy, please speak to him/her before school that day so that s/he remembers not to pet the wolfhounds. IF IT'S OCTOBER, IT'S TIME FOR GRADES 5 AND 6 STUDENTS TO HEAD OUTDOORS Every fall, our Grades 5 and 6 students set off for several days of outdoor learning and adventure. This year, both Grades travel during the week of October 1. SPECIAL-CONSIDERATION APPLICATIONS FOR ADMISSION: TWO IMPORTANT DATES It's hard to believe that it's already time to begin thinking about the 2019-2020 school year! To that end, special-consideration applications for Nursery and PK are due by Friday, November 9, and teacher recommendations for those students are due on Friday, November 30.

OUTSIDE TEAMS, ORGANIZATIONS, AND CLASSES Often parents organize teams and groups to participate in local youth sports leagues, such as Stoddert Soccer. We ask that, when organizing these teams, parents follow the spirit of inclusion as outlined in our birthday party policy. Please extend an invitation to participate to all students in a grade or all students of one gender in a grade. If you are uncertain about how to compose a team in a manner consistent with this policy, please contact the appropriate Division Head. We highly discourage participation in outside activities that adopt exclusive, rather than inclusive, policies. Thank you for your support of this policy!

COMMON SENSE MEDIA TIPS SEPTEMBER TIPS FROM COMMON SENSE MEDIA For years, when St. Patrick's teachers, parents, and students have discussed how to help one another enact the Creed in our online lives, we have drawn from Common Sense Media's resources. Common Sense Media's curriculum for students, online platform for finding app and movie reviews, and suggestions for facilitating schoolwide discussions have helped us find ways to use technology that are kind, responsible, honest, and respectful. As a Common Sense Media Supporter School, St. Patrick's receives Common Sense tips that we look forward to sharing monthly. Below, please find September's tips.
