Thursday, May 10, 2018 NEWSLETTER FEATURES PLEASE JOIN US FOR CHAPEL HONORING FACULTY AND STAFF ON FRIDAY, MAY 18, AT 8:30 AM We will celebrate our talented and dedicated faculty and staff at a special chapel on Friday, May 18, at 8:30 am in the Nave. Even as we honor all of the faculty and staff who help make St. Patrick's such a special place, we will also recognize certain individuals for their service, including two departing (dare we say "retiring"?) longtime educators—school counselor David Evans and Nursery School associate teacher Mendy Thaler—and those celebrating anniversary years of service. We will also award the Love of Teaching Award, the O'Neil-Carew Fellowship for Excellence in Teaching, and the Jeff Keffer Service Award. GRADES 7 AND 8 PERFORMING AND STUDIO ARTS NIGHT FRIDAY, MAY 18 The eleventh annual MacArthur Campus Performing and Studio Arts Night approaches! On Friday, May 18, at 6:45 pm, the Gymnasium and Performance Center opens its doors to display the work of the MacArthur Campus arts curriculum, a proud hallmark of the Grades 6 to 8 program since its beginning. SITE DIRECTOR REFLECTS ON THE IMPACT OF THE HORIZONS AT ST. PATRICK'S PROGRAM Rachel Levin, Grade 3 teacher and Horizons Site Director, spoke recently at the annual Horizons Spring Splash Gala Fundraiser and night of recognition. Click read more to read excerpts from Rachel's remarks and to learn about two of the young people who have participated in the Horizons program. Her remarks remind us why St. Patrick's made the commitment to become a Horizons site and why we continue to engage in this important program. Horizons is a program devoted to providing academic enrichment over the summer and during the school year to students from families with low income. The program keeps these students engaged in academics over the summer, a time when they might otherwise experience academic decline. MANY THANKS TO DAY SCHOOL COMMUNITY FOR RALLYING FOR OUR SIXTH ANNUAL MARCY FERENCE HOOPS FOR HAITI TOURNAMENT Community members ended a hot and summery week coming together for the Day School's annual Marcy Ference Hoops for Haiti 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament. About two-thirds of Day School students—329, to be exact—participated in the event, with 191 players on 64 teams and 138 Superfans cheering them on. As in past years, the Day School community showed incredible generosity, making donations in excess of $32,000 in support of the Haiti Partnership Program—a 17% increase over last year's total. CAUTION – WILD-DUCK WATCH IN PROGRESS And now there are eight! We are all very excited to have our very own version of Make Way for Ducklings! Robert McCloskey would be proud.

THIS WEEK IN THE LIBRARY - Asian Pacific American Heritage Month "Being Asian American means being a part of a long history of people who have risen up in social movements, who have given their lives to this country, and who add to the diversity of America. ... [I]t means transforming the refugee experiences of my youth into a passion for championing the rights of all people to participate in our democracy." - Doua Thor, Executive Director, Southeast Asia Resource Action Center To learn more about Asian Pacific Heritage Month, click here! https://asianpacificheritage.gov/
