JumpStart is a summer reading program designed to provide students entering Grades 4 and 5 with extended opportunities to further develop literacy-related skills such as reading fluency, comprehension, vocabulary, and critical thinking in a nurturing, small-group setting. Using a variety of resources and recommended summer reading lists, students will be encouraged to independently select books to read that span a variety of genres and contain rich, interesting content and good writing.
The JumpStart program is flexible; it aims to meet the needs of each reader, to be challenging, and to foster growth at every level. In addition, due to the small teacher-student ratio, each student will receive frequent interaction with a teacher. Daily sessions are structured to include reading aloud, meaningful discussion, modeling and practice of comprehension strategies, reading response activity time, and sharing.
JumpStart students will receive:
- Explicit instruction in reading and comprehension strategies from St. Patrick’s Episcopal Day School teacher, Ellen Daniels.
- Encouragement and support in choosing appropriate books for independent reading.
Individual guidance in completing a variety of reading responses including oral, written, artistic, and dramatic.
- Time to share thoughts about the text and to make connections between books and what s/he knows.
- A written summary assessment of his/her progress to share with parents at the conclusion of the 3-week session.
- An enjoyable learning environment filled with nourishing content in a relaxed atmosphere that promotes risk-taking and participation!
